Mike Gurfield
Trumpet Artist
Hailed as a "new music veteran", California native Mike Gurfield is one of New York City's most sought after and versatile trumpet players. Mike is the principal trumpet of the contemporary music groups Signal Ensemble, and the Wordless Music Orchestra, and has performed and recorded as principal trumpet with Alarm Will Sound, Cygnus Ensemble, and The Knights, and has been heard in performance with the American Composers Orchestra, The New Jersey Symphony, Harrisburg Symphony, Princeton Symphony, Long Island Philharmonic, New York Symphonic Ensemble, and The League of Composers Orchestra, among many others. He has appeared on Broadway in South Pacific, Matilda, Cinderella, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and more. Mike is the Artistic Director of Deviant Septet, a chamber ensemble dedicated to commissioning and performing new music, and he is the co-founder of the new music brass ensemble, the Brooklyn Brass Quintet. Also active in the indie-rock world, Mike has performed and recorded with such artists as David Byrne, The Dirty Projectors, Tyondai Braxton, John Cale, Johnny Greenwood, and others.
As an educator, Mike serves as an Assistant Professor of Trumpet on the faculty of New York University, and is the head of the brass department at New York's Greenwich House Music School, as well as trumpet faculty at the Horace Mann School, and Saint Ann's School. He is a frequent guest-lecturer, with recent master classes at the University at Buffalo, Eastman School of Music, Loyola University, and University of the Arts, as well as internationally at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada, and Mexico's UAS.
He has been heard live on the radio on NPR, WNYC, KUSC, KKGO, WXXI, Q2, and Radio Bremen, and has performed in some of the best concert halls in the world including Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium and Zenkel Recital Hall, Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and Vivian Beaumont Theater, London's Barbican, The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, and Disney Hall in Los Angeles, Troy New York's EMPAC, as well as Columbia University's Miller Theater, and NYC experimental art spaces like Le Poisson Rouge, The Kitchen, and Galapagos Art Space. Mike can be heard on recordings from Sony Classical, Warner Brothers, Warp Records, Naxos, New Amsterdam Records, Mode Records, Todo Mundo, Tzadik Records, Domino Records, and many more.
Mike received both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, and his principal teachers include James Thompson (Eastman School of Music), Mark Gould (Metropolitan Opera Orchestra), Robert Earley (Philadelphia Orchestra), Vincent Penzarella (New York Philharmonic), Boyde Hood (Los Angeles Philharmonic), and Paul Salvo (Los Angeles Studio Musician).
